Job Summary:

The Department of Care Coordination at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a Director of Social Work. The successful candidate: 

  • Provides clinical and administrative leadership and directs operations, programs, and services of the Departments of Social Work.
  • The incumbent serves all populations from newborns to Geriatrics and patients with all types of psychosocial, behavioral, medical, and surgical needs.
  • Provides administrative leadership to the department
  • Participates in the development and implementation of the departmental strategic plan
  • Assumes accountability for development/maintenance of department’s work climate to maximize employee performance, morale, and productivity throughout the department
  • Establishes cooperative and collaborative relationships within the department and with other disciplines and hospital department to promote the ultimate in-patient assessment and care
  • Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures, regulatory agencies' policies, and professional requirements.
  • Assumes leadership for committees and task forces as assigned by the Senior Associate Administrator
  • Promotes social work practice and patient care that is effective in promoting quality of care, assessment, continuum of care, and appropriate and timely discharge planning.
  • Demonstrates expertise in assessing concrete and clinical social work needs of the patient population with regard to patient condition and age, and ensures that religious practices and beliefs.
  • Participates in the decision-making process in complex patient situations.
  • Oversees the transportation component for the hospital to ensure that all Ambulette and Ambulance companies which service the hospital provide timely and appropriate service for the patient population.  Also ensures that livery service will meet the patients’ needs re: timeliness, courtesy, and quality of care so that discharges are not inappropriately delayed.
  • Audits and monitors processes to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Provides improvement plans to address any workflow and procedure issues identified.
  • Interviews, hires, trains, and evaluates the performance of social leadership as well as assigned line staff and support staff as well as chaplains.
  • Plans, schedules and assigns work activities of social work department.
  • Oversees, and is responsible to ensure that staffing complement is adequate to meet the needs of patient populations
  • Assigns staff to uncovered units to ensure that social work intervention is maximized and length of stay remains stable and/or decreases.
  • Ensures an appropriate social work on-call and recall schedule for evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Prepares annual budgets including projections and plans to ensure appropriate staffing as well as OTPS budget.
  • Participates in the preparation of contracts, status reports, and financial statements, where indicated.
  • Assumes accountability for staff education and development and ensures competency of staff regarding age levels, patient care needs, and organizational and department-specific competencies
  • Ensures compliance with mandatory training and health assessment for all staff on an annual basis.
  • Provides guidance and leadership for staff in the development of leadership/supervisory roles.
  • Ensures that the vision of the hospital and the department is explained to staff and carried out on a daily basis.
  • Collaborates with the Institute for Continuous Education for departmental and divisional programs as indicated.
  • Provides consultation and education in areas of expertise throughout the hospital.  
  • Monitors and audits staff to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Assumes accountability for the monitoring and implementation of Participants in Performance Improvement initiatives within the departments.
  • Participants in the hospital and department quality improvement activities.
  • Monitors results of P.I. reviews and reports same to the staff and administrator on a quarterly basis.
  • Participates in and supports activities of the social work and case management departments, hospital, and related programs.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient/family and institutional information.
  • Adheres to professional and legal standards of social work practice.
  • Contributes to the development of professional social workers and to the knowledge base of hospital chaplains.
  • Assumes special assignments as designated by the Senior Associate Administrator of the department.
  • Is responsible for the supervision of line:
    • Line staff of the Social Work Department as needed.
    • Non-professional staff (secretaries, receptionists, volunteers) as needed.
  • Is responsible for ensuring a collaborative level of working relations with all personnel of other departments and disciplines.
  • Provides individual supervision on an as-needed basis to all supervisees (see T&O for names, titles, and supervises).
  • Responsible to:
    • Continue to develop and maintain an increasingly sound and cooperative working relationship with all related departments
    • Continue to develop leadership skills (including delegating responsibility) in order to promote the departments throughout the institution
    • Continue to develop increased skill in involving the department’s staff in improved program plan, delivery of service, and meeting the needs and objectives of the department and SUNY Downstate
    • Keep abreast of all current trends related to professional practice and social work administration in a hospital setting.
  • Oversees completion and accuracy of monthly timesheets of staff to ensure accurate reporting of annual leave, sick leave, and holiday leave.
  • Approves requested annual and sick leave and compensatory time (when indicated) for all staff.
  • Serves as liaison to on-site Home Care agencies to ensure continuous quality of care (post-hospitalization).
  • Ensures that all departmental policies and procedures are current and up-to-date.
  • Serves as Child Abuse Coordinator for the hospital and presents monitoring and reporting of cases to hospital-wide in-services as scheduled.

Required Qualifications:

  • 7 years of managerial experience (Assistant Director or higher)

  • LCSW, LMSW
