Job Summary:

The Department of Respiratory Therapy a SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a per diem Respiratory Therapist 2. The successful candidate will:

  • Provide respiratory care for Adult, Pediatric, and Neonatal patients under the direction of a physician.
  • Make rounds to determine if a patient is receiving proper respiratory care.
  • Oversee ventilator management.
  • Draw and analyze blood for arterial blood gases.
  • Record respiratory progress of patients who are being ventilated mechanically.
  • Record the respiratory status of all patients.
  • Assist physicians in ventilating patients who cannot sustain their own respiratory function during cardio-respiratory arrests.
  • Provide sputum induction.
  • Administer Nitric Oxide Therapy.
  • Explain the use of respiratory care devices to patients and/or family members and assist in the use thereof.
  • Make entries in patient's progress record and hospital computer systems.
  • Clean and decontaminate equipment once removed from patient use.
  • Provide chest physiotherapy and assist in pulmonary lavage/suctioning. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy or graduate of a two-year AMA-approved Respiratory Therapy Program.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).
  • New York State Respiratory Therapist license required.
  • BLS certification required or to be obtained within 1-year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RR) with NPS, NRP, PALS and ACLS preferred.

Days Variable; Hours Variable

Salary Grade/Rank:

SL-3

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
