Job Summary:

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Nurse Practitioner / Assistant Director of Nursing, Joint Reconstruction Service. The successful candidate will:

  • Support the outpatient clinic operations for Joint Reconstruction Service physicians in a reliable, timely, and efficient manner. 
  • Provide consultation to clinical staff regarding the nursing management of Joint Reconstruction Service patients.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the department, other health care professionals and physicians, to enhance the quality of patient care outcome. Utilize evidence-based practice data to identify trends and improve outcomes.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team to ensure efficient patient admission, transfer, and discharge. Participate in QAPI projects.
  • Support the delivery of quality patient care by holding self and staff accountable to meeting or exceeding established standards.
  • Act as a clinical resource for novice staff members as well as assisting experienced staff in problem solving skills for complex patient care situations.
  • Attend weekly grand rounds and case presentations to build knowledge base.
  • Assist residents on the service and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery with processing paperwork and patient logistics.
  • Compose clear, succinct, thorough, and appropriate clinic notes, utilizing templates where possible to improve efficiency.
  • Arrive on time to the clinic, and stay until all necessary and reasonable tasks have been completed.
  • Follow and anticipate attending physician instructions and expectations in the operating room, especially for common procedures.
  • Continually seek to increase knowledge and understanding of the orthopaedic sub-specialties this role supports.
  • Arrange consults when appropriate.
  • Use macro templates in HealthBridge and Athena EHR systems.
  • Create progress and discharge notes where appropriate for each patient seen.
  • Use service recovery strategies within scope of responsibility to resolve immediate patient concerns.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of clinically-based education programs; participates in specialty associations for the enhancement of continuing education.
  • Perform other tasks for the department and practice as needed.
  • Adhere to the hospital and medical group policies and procedures. 
  • Demonstrate flexibility to adapt to new and evolving challenges; recognize changes in clinical situations and take action in a timely manner.
  • Be a role model for other members of the team, while modeling the We Care values of the institution. 

Required Qualifications:

  • New York State Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner Licensure.
  • 2+ years of experience in professional nursing practice.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 7:30am to 4:00pm

Salary Grade/Rank:

SL-5

Salary Range:

Commensurate with experience and qualifications
