Job Summary:

The Division of Comparative Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Husbandry Supervisor.

Reporting to the Director, this position oversees and coordinates the daily activities of the husbandry staff within the animal facility while maintaining performance levels consistent with and according to standard operating procedures. The position requires strong communication skills. The successful candidate will: 

  • Be responsible for the training of animal care staff in the following: cage changing techniques, room sanitation, autoclave operation, cage wash operations, waste disposal, and other husbandry duties as required.
  • Supervise the daily activities of the staff conducting husbandry activities in the Vivarium; oversee adherence to all standard operating procedures and all required documentation related to husbandry staff; complete annual reviews in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain required attendance levels and adherence to work schedule in accordance with required staffing levels in order to ensure that duties required by SOPS are completed in a timely fashion; maintain close contact with Time & Attendance System regarding time off.
  • Conduct routine quality assurance inspections to confirm that room sanitation, organization and cleanliness meet and/or exceed defined expectations; conduct quality assurance inspections to confirm staff is adhering to established room/cage/rack sanitation schedules; coach and counsel staff as appropriate when non-compliance with SOPs is discovered, and document. 
  • Conduct periodic meetings with Husbandry staff to keep them informed of current and future projects, policies and procedures. 
  • Participate in disaster and business recovery activities and other initiatives as needed.
  • Each month present a staff training (or coordinate the presentation from an outside expert); trainings may be novel subjects and/or may focus on corrective actions associated with deficiencies discovered in meeting the standard operating procedures. 
  • Develop and administer assessments (written, oral, or demonstrative) to measure the effectiveness of training efforts. 
  • Maintain records of training provided that will include at a minimum: a list of attendees at each session, the name, and credentials of the person conducting the session, a copy of the documents/an outline of the training provided or reviewed during the session, the results of any assessments provided. These records will be used to demonstrate compliance for various oversight bodies and should be kept in accordance with SUNY Downstate's record retention policy. 
  • Serve on the internal SOP Committee to assist in the writing, revising, and editing of standard operating procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate of Applied Science in Animal Science field. 
  • Required understanding of animal research, animal care, and the functionality of animal research facilities as well as the ability to manage personnel in a union environment.
  • 7+ years of husbandry experience or other hands-on roles in an animal research facility; 3 to 5 years must include supervisory or management experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.

Work Schedule:

Monday to Friday; 7:00am to 3:30pm
