Job Summary:

The Department of University Police and Public Safety at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Staff Assistant, Police Access Control Unit. The successful candidate will:

  • Assist with the day to day operation, support, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of various security components, resolving issues directly or through engagement of internal partners and vendors as appropriate.
  • Work closely with the Capital Facilities Planning and Information Technology Services departments and assist in project management to incorporate security components into all new construction and renovation projects.  
  • Assist with the installation, programming, testing, acceptance, and operation of physical security technology, including, but not limited to, video, access control, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Perform small-scale installations or repairs themselves, and in arranging and managing contractors hired to perform larger installations.
  • Provide professional guidance regarding software applications for physical and electronic security, CCTV, and related areas for the Institution.
  • Assist with the following on behalf of the University Police Access Control Unit;  
    • order supplies
    • work with Contracts & Procurement as well as vendors regarding purchasing and procurement needs and service contracts
    • maintain records of all requisitions, purchase orders and supply inventory for the unit as well as tracking expenses as related to the unit’s budget allocation. 
    • Work closely with the Manager of the Access Control Unit and the University Police Department’s Budget Manager to ensure expenses fall within the annual budget allocation and in preparation of the Department’s annual budget request as related to the Access Control Unit. 
  • Perform additional job-related duties as required based on the needs of the unit and department.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in terms of availability, as this position requires availability for off-hours support.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience working with low tension installation and maintenance of security equipment such as installing, planning, ordering equipment and maintain CCTV/DVR and related security equipment.
  • Working knowledge of access control, card readers, alarm points, door contacts, mechanical locks, electromechanical locks, electric strikes, control panels.
  • Proficient in video management systems and devices including; analog, IP cameras and encoder, decoders and video storage.
  • Detailed knowledge of low voltage wiring, including code requirements, installations, running conduit, troubleshooting and working with security system hardware.
  • Proficient in networking concepts: LAN, firewalls, routers, switches and VLANs.
  • Reading and interpreting building plans (blueprints).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose system issues, including experiencing testing intrusion detections; systems, access control, panic alarms and surveillance equipment.
  • Experience with Information Security and Risk Management, Access Control, Telecommunications and Network Security.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, comprehensive program evaluation knowledge.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices of security in a large and diverse environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Security Administration, Electrical Technology, Computer Programming, or related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience working with and/or managing security systems in a complex environment. Experience with Software House Platform preferred.
  • Experience working closely with technology professionals, electricians, and other stakeholders to resolve complex issues;
  • Strong organizational and project planning skills;
  • Project management experience;
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices of security in a large and diverse environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • The successful candidate should work well under pressure, and be collegial and able to work effectively in a team environment.

Variable Days; Variable Hours (Full-Time)
