Job Summary:

The Department of Medical Education at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a part-time Clinical Assistant Professor (HS) / Director of Medical Student Ultrasound Curriculum.

The part-time Director of Medical Student Ultrasound Curriculum will serve as the director of a longitudinal, integrated point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum for pre-clinical medical students, delivering high-yield, hands-on education to classes of 200+ medical students per year. Responsible for curricular design, implementation, faculty development/recruitment, and medical student mentorship to support ultrasound education across foundational units and co-curricular programs. Additional duties and key responsibilities will include:

Curriculum Development & Integration

  • Design and implement an integrated ultrasound curriculum aligned with pre-clinical organ system blocks.
  • Develop session objectives, instructional materials, and assessment strategies for ultrasound education.
  • Integrate ultrasound teaching with anatomy, physiology, and early clinical reasoning across all first- and second-year units.

Workshop Leadership & Instruction

  • Organize and lead multiple large-scale, hands-on ultrasound workshops annually serving 200+ students per class year, utilizing small-group instructional models.
  • Direct sessions covering:
    • Ultrasound fundamentals and physics
    • Renal ultrasound
    • Cardiac ultrasound
    • Abdominal ultrasound (including EFAST, biliary, and pelvic applications)
    • Transvaginal ultrasound
    • Head and neck ultrasound
  • Ensure standardized instruction in Image acquisition, interpretation, and patient safety principles.

Faculty & Instructor Recruitment

  • Recruit, coordinate, and supervise a multidisciplinary teaching team of ultrasound-trained faculty and Emergency Medicine residents to support hands-on instruction.
  • Develop teaching capacity by engaging near-peer educators and fostering a sustainable instructor pipeline.

Required Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree such as an MD, PhD, DO or equivalent in a field related to Medical Education.
  • A distinguished record of scholarship, and be an accomplished teacher or mentor in the field of medicine.
